Auditor Galloway statement on passage of legislation expanding absentee vote by mail for elections in 2020

May 15, 2020

Columbia, Mo. — Today, Auditor Nicole Galloway made the following statement on passage of legislation expanding absentee vote by mail for elections in 2020:

“I applaud legislators for working diligently and in a bipartisan way to pass a bill expanding mail-in voting for elections in 2020. This policy is the product of compromise and a positive step forward. The Governor should sign it immediately. Missourians want and need a system that makes voting easier. The next step should be the elimination of the excuse and notary requirements entirely. Missouri is one of only 11 states that requires voters to access a notary in order to vote absentee. The notary requirement is not essential to election security as we have seen in 39 other states. Missouri should adopt policies that allow any registered voter to vote absentee by mail without providing an excuse and without having to obtain a notary seal.”
