Auditor Galloway calls for the formation of an emergency economic relief council

March 23, 2020

Columbia, Mo. — Auditor Nicole Galloway is calling for the formation of an emergency economic relief council to advise the Governor’s administration on economic stabilization in the short term and recovery. Now that Governor Parson has issued an order on social distancing, the impact on Missouri’s business community and workforce must be given the same focus and diligence as the response to the public health emergency. An economic advisory council would help streamline decision-making so that Missouri businesses and working families get the clarity they deserve even as the administration responds to the immediate threat to health.

“Missouri workers, business owners, and their families need assurances that help is on the way right now,’ said Galloway. “The economic impact of this pandemic may be magnitudes greater than we’ve ever faced. I’ve been speaking with business and labor leaders who have ideas and expertise to address the economic fallout of this pandemic. We need their voices in the midst of the crisis and in our long-term recovery from it. ”

In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis formed an advisory council to advise his administration on short and long term strategies to stabilize the state’s economy. In Oregon, Governor Kate Brown convened a 28-member council of government and business leaders to marshal state programs and agencies to address the economic fallout of COVID-19. St. Louis County Executive Sam Page announced the formation of an economic rescue team. A state-level advisory council would complement similar local efforts.

Last week, Auditor Galloway called for the creation of a COVID-19 Relief Package. She has also called for the State Emergency Operations Center to be activated as a COVID-19 Response Command Center. Economic advisors from the business community, organized labor, civic organizations, state and local government, and private sector investors should be at the table throughout this emergency.
